Ensayos, founded in Tierra del Fuego in 2010, Ensayos [inquiries/essays/rehearsals] is a collective research practice. The mission of Ensayos is eco-cultural conservation work in Tierra del Fuego and other archipelagos through collaborative art, science, and community projects in partnership with existing ecological and cultural conservation initiatives. On the main isle of Tierra del Fuego, WCS Parque Karukinka, Caleta María, and Hach Saye are foundational collaborators.

Raíz Común, a slow sisterly experiment in translation through which a group of participants – writers, scientists, and artists–learn the Selk'nam language. Taught by Hema’ny Molina, a Selk’nam leader and writer, and Fernanda Olivares Molina, the first member of the community to return to Tierra del Fuego, Chile, from which the Selk’nam were exiled in the late 19th and early 20th century. Raíz Común is made possible by a 3-year award from the Tamaas Foundation.

Cumbre Aconcagua, MoMA, New York.

The first in a series of conferences for the newly established Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Research Institute for the Study of the Art from Latin America at MoMA. Cumbre Aconcagua (Aconcagua Summit) examined how water has been owned, used, and debated in the Americas through important bodies of work by three women artists: Carolina Caycedo (Colombian), Cecilia Vicuña (Chilean), and Maria Thereza Alves (Brazilian). The conference consisted of three online conversations, or confabulaciones, between the artists and eminent theorists, historians, attorneys, and scientists: Ignacio Valero, Denise Ferreira da Silva, and Marisol de la Cadena. It concluded with an experimental publication called The Water Is the Law which focused on the complexities of the status of the water in Chile.

Hydrofeminist METitations, New Museum, New York.

As part of our digital residency at the New Museum, I curated a series of three podcasts. Drawing from Ensayos’s transdisciplinary work, these podcasts focused on waters in different archipelagic regions, including Tierra del Fuego, New York, eastern Australia, and Norway. Journalist Catalina Jaramillo guided listeners through four acts that mirrored different aspects of Ensayos’s field research: fiction, fact, somatic exercise, and care ethics. Each concluded with a song.
